The World at War
The World at War is a 26-episode British documentary television series chronicling the Second World War. At the time of its completion in 1973, it cost £900,000, making it the most costly series ever produced. It was produced by Jeremy Isaacs, Laurence Olivier narrated it, and Carl Davis created the score. Mark Arnold-book Forster's The World at War was published in 1973 to accompany the television series. The World at War has received accolades and is now considered a landmark in the history of British television. As many people's memories of the Second World War were still fresh at the time of its completion, the producer Jeremy Isaacs was deemed ahead of his time for reviving military history studies. The series concentrated, among other things, on depicting the devasting human experiences of the war; how life and death affected soldiers, sailors, and airmen, civilians, sad victims of tyranny, and concentration camp inmates during the war years.
