Saints & Strangers
Saints & Strangers is a novel that goes beyond the known historical accounts of Thanksgiving and the creation of Plymouth Plantation, depicting the struggles and sorrows of the settlers at Plymouth: 102 men, women, and children who left on a rented ship for a place they had never seen. Half of this group are pilgrims or saints, religious separatists who left their previous life for a single cause: religious freedom. The commercial adventurers, sometimes known as strangers, had less spiritual and more material, real-world goals. This collision of values generated difficult psychological struggles for the group as they attempted to form a new colony, which was exacerbated by a complicated relationship with the indigenous Native American tribes. The opposing allegiances of different communities culminated in assimilation, faith, and compromise trials that continue to define our nation to this day.
