Maude
The American comedy Maude aired on CBS from September 12, 1972 to April 22, 1978. Bea Arthur portrays Maude Findlay, an outspoken, middle-aged, politically liberal woman who lives in suburban Tuckahoe, Westchester County, New York with her fourth husband, domestic appliance company owner Walter Findlay. Maude espoused the principles of women's liberation, consistently voted for Democratic Party candidates, firmly supported legal abortion, and pushed for civil rights, racial equality, and gender equality. However, her forceful and somewhat dictatorial demeanor frequently led her into difficulty when she spoke out on these topics. The program was a spin-off of All in the Family, in which Beatrice Arthur debuted as Edith Bunker's niece Maude; like All in the Family, Maude was a sitcom with topical stories devised by Norman Lear. Unusually for an American sitcom, a number of episodes featured simply Maude and Walter in what amounted to half-hour "two-hander" teleplays. Bea Arthur presented an episode-long, introspective monologue to an unseen psychotherapist in the fourth season's "The Analyst" episode.
