Kavanagh QC
Between 1995 and 2001, Central Television produced for ITV the British television series Kavanagh QC. It is frequently rebroadcast on ITV3, and seasons 1 through 6 are available on DVD for Region 2. The series stars John Thaw as barrister James Kavanagh QC, a Bolton, Greater Manchester native from a working-class background. This is only revealed in later episodes, as his parents' health deteriorates, and during a conversation with a coworker who assumed Kavanagh was a Yorkshireman. The series focused on his courtroom struggles and family troubles, including the loss of his devoted and affectionate wife. He begins dating a fellow barrister later on. In court, Kavanagh is typically seen defending a client who appears certain to be convicted until a twist in the case occurs; nevertheless, Kavanagh is occasionally seen in a prosecutorial capacity. Kavanagh frequently faces cases with a subtext of racism, misogyny, or other discrimination in the primary plot. In subplots, Jeremy, a pompous and self-absorbed barrister in chambers, provided the comic relief. Kavanagh will not tolerate injustice and is never intimidated by threats or bribery from those he faces in court.
