Jack of All Trades

Jack of All Trades is a syndicated half-hour action-comedy series that ran for two seasons in 2000. It constituted the Back2Back Action Hour alongside Cleopatra 2525, and both episodes were significant for being the first American non-animated action series produced in the half-hour format since the 1970s. The show was discontinued midway through its second season. The program is set around the turn of the nineteenth century on the imaginary island of Pulau-Pulau in the East Indies, which is under French authority. Jack Stiles is a U.S. secret agent who was dispatched there by President Jefferson. He meets his British contact and love interest, the English spy Emilia Rothschild, there. Together, they collaborate to combat Napoleon and other challenges to the United States. Jack is perceived by the public as Emilia's attaché, but when the situation calls for it, he transforms into a masked hero: The Daring Dragoon. The show featured numerous running gags, such as intentional historical inaccuracies, Jack being responsible for numerous significant historical events without receiving credit, Emilia inventing a miraculous invention in a transparent deus ex machina, sexual puns and innuendos, and Jack and Emilia's ongoing romantic tension.
