Other plot elements revolve round Elizabeth Ashton, also a writer coming in a small community's personality. A degree of distress is present involving the newcomer who's ignorant of any underlying racial tensions. This naivety allows Aborigine Vincent Burunga to be easily befriended by her. This combination is the police officer Phil McCarthy who seeks Ashton's affections whilst being lent to her friendship with Burunga, not as a rival suitor, but because of prejudice.
