A Different World
The American sitcom A Different World ran on NBC for six seasons. One of the main characters in the original series was Denise Huxtable, a fictional college student at Hillman College, a historically black institution of higher learning in the state of Virginia. It was mainly Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne who took center stage in the second season after Bonet's departure in the first. Several of the main historically black fraternities and sororities were represented in the show. If The Cosby Show writers had avoided certain topics, A Different World would usually address them. One of the earliest American network television episodes to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic was one that aired in 1990.
