Norval Morrisseau was Canada's first Indigenous artist to receive recognition in the art world. By the start of the twentieth century, his work had amassed tens of thousands of dollars in value. As a result, when Kevin Hearn of the Barenaked Ladies discovered his beloved painting was a fake, he filed suit. However, as Jamie Kastner's documentary uncovers, there was a cottage industry in false Morrisseaus that thrived for years on greed, exploitation, bigotry, and contempt.
