The Trial
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff was impeached and removed from office in 2016 following a corruption scandal that involved, among others, her then vice-president Michel Temer, among others. The director Maria Augusta Ramos follows the trial of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff from the perspective of her legal team. This is a courtroom play that emerges slowly: the appearances of the various parties gradually transform the proceedings into something more akin to a performance on the courtroom stage. Inside the courtroom, great emotions are played out to their fullest extent, while on the other side of the doors, lobbyists and supporters make their way down the halls. Meanwhile, outside, in front of Brasil's modernist government buildings, a chorus of demonstrators is shouting in the style of the Greek chorus. Only the primary character, Dilma Rousseff, maintains a professional and detached demeanor.
