The Stranger

If we are gone, what exactly do people remember of us? A British artist, neal MacGregor, expired independently aged 44, in a stone hen-house he couldn't stand up in, where he dwelt on a remote island with electricity, water or heating. Even the Gaelic-speaking islanders on the depopulating islandknew little of Neal through the years he dwelt there. Who was this Stranger? Can he be a British spy documenting IRA gun-running routes, as some islanders thought? Was he attempting to take charge of the island? As others thought, was he crazy? Or was he seeking solitude? Neal left volumes of attractively exemplified note books and secret diaries, and this gorgeous enigmatic movie brings together the jigsaw of missing bits, also sensitively paints a portrait of a person, living on the edge, physically and emotionally, and also the insular island community he dwelt amongst.
