The Real Versailles

As BBC Two premieres its new play set at the surroundings of Versailles, Lucy Worsley and also Helen Castor tell the reallife stories of earth's greatest buildings. They reveal that the colourful world of drama, gender and intrigue that his courtiers and Louis XIV inhabited. Lucy untangles Louis's complex realm of court etiquette, fashion and feasting, while Helen delves into the archives and unpicks the world of court that Louis created. We meet the folks behind the on screen personalities and see what drove Louis to glorify his reign on a scale unmatched by any preceding monarch, examine the stress between Louis and his brother Philippe, a conflict protagonist and overt homosexual, plus so they meet the coterie of women who competed for Louis's interest. We see that Louis was callous in his search for glory in defeating his enemies and succeeded. In his 72-year reign that was record breaking, France became renowned for the culture and elegance.
