The Reader

The narrative of Michael Berg, a German lawyer who, as a teen in the late 1950s, had an affair with an elderly woman, Hanna, who then vanished only to resurface years later as one of those defendants at a war crimes trial originating from her activities like a concentration camp guard late in the war. He realizes that Hanna is illiterate and may be hiding that fact at the trouble of her freedom.
