The City Without Jews
Because of the nation's bad economic crisis, the Jews are made the scapegoats for the economic and social ills afflicting the population in the Republic of Utopia, and the government decides to expel them. Leo Strakosch is among those who have been exiled. He is engaged to the daughter of Counsellor Linder. He infiltrates the Republic covertly in order to demonstrate to society the folly of its anti-Semitism. Bettauer's novel differs significantly from the film adaptation. "Vienna" was dubbed "Utopia." There was even a happy ending.
