The Bellwether
Joanne appears to be nothing more than a book store owner to the general public, but the Conspiracy is aware of her true identity. It's not a good idea to be around her. She is a bellwether, a leader in the background who is well on her way to becoming her complete self. They find out that Joanne is something so much more than even she ever realized when they abduct her in an attempt to shatter her so that they can force her to conform. The thriller Joanne is an enhanced example of the one-character, one-room, female subgenre. It is a modern rite of passage story that the majority of women have to go through in order to become entire human beings: How does one be themselves in the face of vast amounts of anti-woman sentiment and hatred? (both overt and institutionalized). It is also the first film ever made that stars a woman, making it the world's first one-person film. A one-person film is a movie that only contains one character.
