The Battle of the River Plate

The Royal Navy fought a desperate battle in the early years of World War II to keep the Atlantic convoy routes open and the British Isles supplied. The numerous surface/commerce raiders that had slipped out of German waters just before war was declared posed a significant threat. They were primarily used to attack and sink merchant shipping, and they could and did strike anywhere and everywhere. They were supplied by axis cargo ships or tankers. This is the story of one such ship, the 'Admiral Graf Spee,' and how three lightly armed Royal Navy cruisers armed with 6 and 8 inch guns bravely faced off against this powerful 'pocket battleship' armed with 11 inch guns.
