Karbala
On 3 April 2004, during the vacation of Ashura, Iraqi rebels loyal to Shiite leader Muktada As-Sadr, launched an insurgency. Even the Poles, together with Iraqi authorities and soldiers, were awarded the task of defending City Hall, headed by Lieutenant colonel Grzegorz Kaliciak. The battle developed into the Polish involvement as World War II. Although about 80 insurgents were murdered in a counterattack, not a single soldier expired.
