John Ford: Dreaming the Quiet Man
Interviews with Ford fans include Martin Scorsese, Peter Bogdanovicz, Jim Sheridan, William Dowling, and Joe McBride. There's a mesmerizing archive of the film's making, as well as rare pictures. The documentary's major setting is Connemara, Ireland's west coast, where Ford's parents were born. We meet Ford's relatives, the Feeneys, who tell us about his parents' escape from Ireland following the Great Famine and Ford's return to Ireland in 1922 to visit his cousins, the Thorntons, and witness their house being burned down by the infamous Black and Tans. Ford contributed money to the IRA under the guise of investigating locations for a film. We journey to Portland, Maine, where Ford grew up before going on to become a director in Hollywood's early years. The young man did well, but he couldn't get his thoughts off of Ireland.
