In India, people began to capture and train elephants for war, parades, and worship about 5,000 years ago. Even now, as he grows up, Makbul still spends time every day with wild and tamed elephants that live in the forest near his village in southern India. Makbul follows in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, even though his mother doesn't want him to. He goes deep into the forest to learn the government-employed job of mahout, or elephant handler. When a baby elephant named Vikrama is born, Makbul takes care of the animal.
