Ésimésac
Ésimésac gets the people of Saint-Élie-de-Caxton to work together on a community garden because they barely have enough food to live. By working the land together, each person will get more from it. At the same time, talk of a new railroad line brings hope that Saint-Élie-de-Caxton will be connected to the rest of the world. Riopel, a big blacksmith, starts building a railroad track and talks the townspeople out of playing in the garden so they can invest in his plan. The weight of metal makes Ésimésac's big project fail. But can he stop things from getting better?
