Cezanne and I
They were as passionately in love with one another as thirteen-year-old boys. They discussed everything, including disobedience and curiosity, hopes and doubts, girls and ambitions of greatness. Compared to Emile, Paul was wealthy. They overate after starving themselves, skinny-dipped, and drank absinthe. Models were doodled throughout the day and caressed at night. Paul now works as a painter, and Emile as a writer. Paul missed out on the glory. But Emile possesses everything: notoriety, wealth, and the ideal wife that Paul once adored. They assess each other, exalt each other, and criticize each other. Like a couple in love at first sight, they go out of contact and then reconnect.
