Burden of Dreams

Werner Herzog begins work on his 1982 epic "Fitzcarraldo," but soon encounters serious setbacks, ranging from casting issues to his own stubborn refusal to use special effects. After reshooting much of the film due to the recasting of the lead actor, his crew must then haul an old-fashioned steamboat over a mountain using only manpower. Herzog struggles to realize his vision with a determination bordering on insanity, vowing to see the film completed – even if it means his undoing.
