Black Is … Black Ain’t
Marlon Riggs, an African-American documentary filmmaker, was working on his final project as he passed away in 1994 from symptoms connected to AIDS; in numerous moments, he addresses the camera from his hospital bed. Interviews with African-American intellectuals and political theorists including Cornel West, Bell Hooks, and Angela Davis are intercut with excerpts of misogynistic and anti-gay insults from well-known hip-hop songs to discuss sexism and homophobia in the black community.
