American Friends

Francis Ashby, a senior Oxford don on a solo holiday in the Alps, encounters American Caroline and her companion Elinor, the growing Irish-American daughter she adopted many years ago. Ashby discovers that he enjoys their company, especially Elinor's, and both ladies are drawn to him. Even so, when they arrive unannounced at Oxford, he is taken aback. The College grounds, let alone the rooms, are off-limits to women. The upstanding Fellows frown on any relationship, no matter how benign.
