A Thousand Clowns
Twelve-year-old Nick lives with his Uncle Murray, a Dickensian figure akin to Mr. Micawber who is constantly praying that nothing will turn up. What emerges is a social worker who develops feelings for Murray and a smidgeon of affection for Nick. As child welfare officials attempt to coerce Murray into being a conventional man (as a condition for allowing him to keep Nick), the nephew, who has previously lauded his Uncle's iconoclastic attitude to life, attempts to act as a mediator. However, when he succeeds, he is taken aback by the uncle's willingness to submit to society in order to save the relationship.
