Irishman Charles Adare journeys to take up a fresh life together with the aid of his cousin who has been appointed . When he arrives he matches ex-convict and powerful land owner, Sam Flusky, who would like to complete a small business deal with him. Whilst attending a supper party at Flusky's house, Charles matches Flusky's wife Henrietta who he had known as a child back. Henrietta seems to be on the point of madness and is an alcoholic.
