Tormenting the Hen
When city mice meet country mice in "Tormenting the Hen," it is a sarcastic look at how well-meaning cosmopolitans and strange townpeople get into fights over food and drink in country homes, black-box theaters, back yards, and local pubs, among other places. Julie Decker, the curator of the show, wants to send playwright Claire (Dameka Hayes) away to an artists' retreat so she can perform a political one-act about race, resentment, and male power. On her way to her wedding with her fiancé Monica (Carolina Monnerat), the couple is greeted by a town mystery, Mutty (Matt Shaw), who brings a dark cloud with him. Claire is babysitting Joel (Brian H. Brooks) and Adam (David Malinsky) while Monica tries to keep her sanity despite her boyfriend's less attention and her neighbor's closeness. Each woman fights to keep her own identity in a hostile environment, which leads to a heart-wrenching climax that doesn't have any easy answers for the characters or for the audience, either.
