In Vienna, a writer of pulp , Austria, Holly Martins, arrives penniless as a guest of his own youth chum Harry Lime, only to learn he's died. Martins develops a conspiracy theory later learning of a"third man" present in the time of Harry's passing, running in to disturbance from British officer Major Calloway, and falling head over heels to Harry's griefstricken lover, Anna.
