The Reluctant Astronaut
Roy Fleming, portrayed by Don Knotts, is a kiddie-ride operator in a small town who has a morbid fear of heights. Roy grudgingly travels to Houston after discovering that his father had enrolled him in the space program, only to discover that he will be working as a janitor and not as an astronaut. Roy manages to convince his family and friends that he is an astronaut in order to live up to the expectations of his authoritarian father. Roy is given the opportunity to tackle his phobias when NASA chooses to launch a non-scientist into orbit to validate a new automated spaceship.
