Natha an inadequate farmer from Peepli village in the heart of rural India is about to shed his plot of land because of an unpaid small business loan. A quick fix to the problem is the a federal government program that assists the households of indebted farmers that have devoted self-destruction. As a way of survival Farmer Natha can pick to die. His brother mores than happy to push him towards this distinct 'honour' but Natha hesitates. Local elections are nearby and also what could have been an additional unnoticed occasion becomes a 'cause celebre' with every person wanting a piece of the action. Political bigwigs, high-ranking politicians, neighborhood henchmen and the ever-zealous media descend upon drowsy Peepli to stake their case. The inquiry on every person's lips - "Will he or Will not he?" As the mania escalates, no one seems to care just how Natha really feels.
