Original Cast Album: Company
The musical "Company," by Stephen Sondheim, opened on Broadway in the spring of 1970. According to tradition, the cast recording is done the first Sunday after opening night. D.A. Pennebaker, a now-famous documentary filmmaker, filmed the making of the original cast recording, including the back and forth between Sondheim and the actors and how it felt to try to record a live performance. At the end of the movie, Elaine Stritch sings "The Ladies Who Lunch." The production performed for two years on Broadway and won six Tony Awards, including "Best Musical." The plan to make a series of movies called "Original Cast Album" never came to fruition.
