Lora Meredith, a widow that dreams to be on Broadway, has a chance encounter with Annie Johnson, a black single mother. While Lora pursues her stage career, annie becomes the caretaker of all Lora's daughter, Susie. Both women deal with the difficulties of jealousy: while the light skinned daughter, Sarah Jane of Annie and her African American identity, struggle, her connection threatens with Susie.
