Fiddler's Journey to the Big Screen
The movie Fiddler on the Roof, which Pauline Kael of The New Yorker called "the most powerful cinema musical ever created," celebrated its 50th anniversary in the fall of2021, the year it was released. Jeff Goldblum provides the voiceover for the documentary FIDDLER'S JOURNEY TO THE BIG SCREEN. captures the humor and drama of filmmaker Norman Jewison's attempt to reconstruct the lost world of Jewish life in Tsarist Russia and re-envision the renowned stage play as a wide-screen epic. Jewison's mission was to re-create the world of Jewish life in Russia during the time of the Tsar. Filmmaker Daniel Raim, who was nominated for an Oscar, puts us in the director's chair and in Jewison's heart and mind by drawing on behind-the-scenes footage and never-before-seen stills as well as original interviews with Jewison, Topol (Tevye), composer John Williams, production designer Robert F. Boyle, film critic Kenneth Turan, lyricist Sheldon Harnick, and actresses Rosalind Harris, Michele The video examines how Jewison's involvement in the production of Fiddler grew him as an artist and gave him a new lease on life.
