Eroica
This episode has two short sketches based on events from World War II. Throughout the first novel, "Scherzo alla polacca," the protagonist, a cunning son who is trying to save his skin, eventually becomes a hero and discovers a purpose to fight. He initially tries to evade subterranean training in order to prevent the Warsaw uprising, but he is successful in this endeavor. He comes across as something sane in a society gone insane when his drinking, disdain for safety, and cowardice are expressed soberly and with comedic effect. His wish to live is more acceptable than any desire to die in a heroic manner. Two novels are set in prison camps: "Ostinato lugubre" is about a man's futile attempt to escape from a prison camp after he has grown tired of the imprisonment and idiocy of the professional soldiers who are striving to maintain the status quo. The fact that he was able to escape helps to bolster the morale of his fellow inmates, while the "escapee" remains hidden from both German and compatriots." It is based on a database of Polish films
