Beauty and the Bastard
A recent finnish film centers on two very different young adults who, following a fortuitous encounter, start making music together and eventually fall in love. Nelli's parents have the ideal job and partner in mind, but she wants to be a singer instead. She meets the young, gritty Hip Hop musician Sunen by chance at the studio and begs him to assist her in creating a demo tape. The subsequent narrative, which explores how differences converge and the challenges that must be addressed, is also masterfully written. Furthermore, the music is quite professionally produced. The fact that this is the director's debut picture is just astounding.
