A Very Long Engagement
Back in 1919, Mathilde had been 19 years of age. Her fiancé Manech left for the front at the Somme. Like numerous others he had been"killed on the field of battle." It's written in white and black to the state notice. But Mathilde refuses to trust it. She'd know if Manech had expired.
