Tennie's reputation at school suffers a major blow just before the prom a few years after her mother's death. Her father, Robert, an advertising professional who has since rebuilt his firm, tries to do the same with his connection with his daughter, further complicating the daily rigors of adolescence. Despite his therapist's advice, overeager Robert tries very hard to get close to Tennie by demonstrating his own way of caring. With the help of his newly recruited 19-year-old driver/intern, Jack, he attempts to learn more about his daughter's personal life. Tennie, who is practically raised by her extended family, is academically inclined and mature for her age, with compassion for others, but she also has a touch of sarcasm and a hint of rebelliousness. Tennie realizes that in order to get her father off her back, she needs to persuade him to find a lady friend.
