Oscar Grubman is surrounded by beautiful, smart ladies. Voltaire inspires him to be sensitive and empathetic. He speaks fluent French and believes that the most telling characteristic of a lady is her hands, which he believes to be the most telling aspect of all. On the train ride home from Chauncey Academy for the Thanksgiving weekend, Oscar confides in his best friend that he has big plans for the weekend: he will win the heart of his true love. However, there is one huge problem: Oscar's real love is his stepmother Eve, who is also his stepmother. Oscar is convinced that he would make a better partner for Eve than his overworked father. He is depressed as a result of his failure to gain Eve's affection. A new obstacle in Oscar's road to finding his true love is Diane, Eve's best friend, who, one night, while wearing Eve's borrowed perfumed scarf, provides him with momentary comfort in an unorthodox tryst. For Diane, Oscar fills a hole in her life that had previously been unfilled. Because of Oscar's relentless pursuit of Eve, Diane serves as a distraction, which ultimately leads to an unexpected outcome.
